Animals

Friday, 4 October 2024  | Jemma Drew

The precious animals of Earth we share,

All created intricately and with care,

They all have a special beauty like no other,

I hold them dear in my heart — like that of a mother

From the herds of brumbies,

Running in unity within Australia’s snowy lands,

Due to them fleeing from hunters’ hands

To the mighty Siberian tiger,

Wandering throughout the forests in the north,

To the gentle giants of the Savannah,

Covered by the sun and its warmth

A family of elephants migrating — together as one,

And a group of giraffes overlooking the plains, Towards the rising sun.

From the birds of the sky,

The bright and colourful macaw,

You inhabit the fruitful rainforest,

I look at you with overwhelming awe

To the soaring golden eagle,

Flying through the currents of the wind,

For you are wild and regal

To the barn owl — the master of silence and sound,

Flecked with grey and silver,

You are completely hushed above the ground

And now to the creatures of the great sea,

Full of beautiful sharks, often feared without reason,

As if they have committed horrible treason

To the tropical fish hidden within the reef,

Full of vibrancy and life,

To see will leave you in disbelief,

And a pod of orcas, searching for prey far and wide,

During the rise and fall of the ocean tide

There are far too many extraordinary animals to name,

But in the end, I love them all the same.
