Support Young Indigenous Leaders through the Grassroots Gathering
Tuesday, 2 September 2014
The Grasstree Gathering is a national, non-denominational event which brings together approximately 50 emerging Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Christian leaders from across Australia. This gathering is endorsed by senior Aboriginal Christian Leaders such as Aunty Jean Phillips, Uncle Graham Paulson, Uncle Ray Minniecon and Uncle Graeme Mundine.
The Grasstree Gathering 2014 will be held in Brisbane from 6–10 October 2014.
Our vision is to celebrate, encourage, equip and inspire an emerging generation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Christian Leaders.
The aims of the Grasstree Gathering are:
- Create a network amongst established, emerging and young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Christian leaders
- Offer theological and community development, training and equipping
- Encourage and empower new and existing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander ministry workers
- Provide a platform to discuss issues affecting our communities and the issues affecting our people
- Explore pathways for the wider church to partner with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander ministries
- To have representation from remote, rural and urban Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities
The need for this gathering has developed from the requests of younger and emerging Indigenous Christian Leaders who often feel isolated in their church communities.
I attended the inaugural Grasstree Gathering in 2012 and had the privilege of being the coordinator for the Grasstree Gathering 2013. I can whole-heartedly say it changed my life.
The issues facing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are many and varied. As Indigenous Christians we want to be part of the solution to issues facing our people. The Grasstree Gathering enables us to get together to discuss our ministries and to discuss our responses as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Christians to these issues. It also gives us the chance to connect with, learn from, and listen to our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Christian Elders.
Our guiding bible verse is:
“…They will be called “Trees of Justice”, planted by the LORD to honour his name. Then they will rebuild cities that have been in ruins for many generations.” Isaiah 61:3-4 (CEV).
Yours in Christ
