Ethos Board


Deborah Upton – Chair

Deborah chairs Ethos Centre for Christianity and Socity and serves on other faith based boards. She is currently the Chair of Centre for Biblical Preaching and a board member of the Australian Institute of Archaeology and EA Foundation. Deborah has always combined her secular work with service into the Christian world, believing that there should be a continual overlap and integration of the two. This has not only been expressed through using her skills in board positions on various Christian organisatiosn (including Zadok), serving on the deaconate and providing service and leadership in churches, but also expressing her faith and values in the framework of her Monday to Friday roles. Deborah worked in the finance industry for many years and continues to consult in the sector.

Gordon Preece – Director

Rev’d Dr Gordon Preece is Director of Ethos Centre for Christianity and Society and Chair of the Melbourne Anglican Social Responsibilities Committee as a consultant for Ethos and Honorary Director of the University of Divinity Network for Religion & Social Policy (RASP). Gordon was a minister at several Anglican churches in Sydney and until early 2020 senior minister at Yarraville Anglican.

David Spargo – Treasurer

David has been on the Ethos board more than once. May be he is a sucker for punishment, or maybe he is just a really cool guy… He is great at being the treasurer, and is passionate about a lot of stuff related to what Ethos does.

Claire Harvey

Claire Harvey JP is involved with The Village Church community in Mount Eliza, along with her two secondary-school aged children. She works as People & Culture Manager within the Aged Care sector, having trained at Monash University (B.Com) and the Bible College of Victoria now MST (M.Div). Claire is an active member of the Climate Coaching Alliance and also works as a vocational coach with ECHO Coaching. Claire is particularly interested in issues of justice, stewardship and environmental sustainability, as well as the integration of faith with the everyday world of work.

Bill Walker

Bill Walker is a really nice bloke. He is very tall, I mean seriously tall… you don’t get to see it when you are on zoom, but in person, you are definately looking up! Hey, he also has a really nice smile. Bill comes up with some really good ideas. …. clearly I am not on the editorial team, as I am really using ‘really’ a bit too much…

Chris Prior

Chris Prior is an experienced Christian educator having held positions in both Christian schooling and the Christian tertiary sector. Chris’ experience in Higher Education includes lecturing in undergraduate teacher education programs as well in several Master of Education courses. Chris lectures in Worldview, Philosophy of Education, and in School Leadership. He is the author of Who We Are Matters: Reflections on Christian school leadership (2023). He also contributed chapters and edited Heartbeat: Encouraging biblical faithful education and co-edited Reflections: Conversations on Christian schooling and worldview. Chris’ doctoral studies were on leaders perceptions and practices of Christian schooling.

Graeme Cole

Graeme Cole is an award-winning journalist, writer and editor, and a veteran public affairs and communications executive with experience in crisis management, government, and stakeholder relations. He has worked on suburban newspapers, The Australian and on Sydney radio. He has held senior communications and public affairs positions with some of Australia’s largest church-based community service and aged care providers. He has edited numerous Christian magazines and written for more and was the 2016 winner of the Gutenberg Award for religious journalism. Graeme attends St Andrew’s Anglican Church Cronulla. He holds a BA (Hons) in Government and a Graduate Diploma in Communication.
